Chapter 1 - On The True Hitting Of The Ball

Why is it that the average player continues to play a poor game? It is because
we are unable to hit the ball true, regularly and consistently.
If we could do this, and could go on doing it unfailingly throughout the round,
we would be fine players. The great, ever-present essential in the game is to
hit the ball true with the centre of the club-face. If you could do this, you
would never lose a match.

Chapter 2 - The Value And Nature Of The Swing
|
We swing the club with the object of hitting the ball. It can be done in a dozen
different ways, from high up over the head, like a man using a flail, to low
down round the knees, like a man mowing hay. One method will prove better than
another. Sooner or later, if a lot of men are employing various methods for
arriving at the same object, one "best" method will be evolved, and will become
the accepted method of arriving at that particular object.
Many men of intelligence and enthusiasm have been aiming for several hundred
years at finding the best method of swinging a club so that it will hit a
golf-ball with consistent accuracy. The result is what we call the golf swing.
It is simply the best method so far devised of swinging a club so as to hit a
ball with the extreme accuracy demanded by golf.

Chapter 3 - How To Learn The Swing
|
In the last chapter I said that the swing was divided into three main
subdivisions - the up-swing, the down-swing, and the follow-through. I was
inaccurate there are four, and the fourth, or rather the first, is the address.
I left it out purposely, because the address is not usually included in the
swing, and I did not want to send your attention wandering down a side-issue,
wondering why I had included it.
The
address is an essential and integral portion of the swing, and its importance is
not usually sufficiently recognised. It is no mere pose, an affectation peculiar
to golfers. You will probably have realised by now that in taking up the
position of the address you are getting the pedestal and rod into position.
It
is more than this, however: you are getting yourself into the position in which
you will be at the moment of impact, when the club-head meets the ball in the
down-swing.

Chapter 4 - Wrist-Play
|
The wrists seem to lead and dominate the whole swing. It is therefore
important that they should be correctly employed. If you get into the position
of the address holding the club in the left hand, you will find that if you do
not turn the club head to the right you can raise the club from the ground by
flexing the wrist with the fingers up and the back of the hand towards the
ground. This action is wrong, and should never be employed.

Chapter 5 - On Keeping Your Eye On The Ball
|
As you walk up to your ball, and on arriving there it lies, you should
study the next shot, and decide how you are going to play it; then get into
position for the stroke and place your club behind the ball. Then look up at the
flag and visualise the shot; get the picture into your eye and brain, and then
look down at the ball and at once play into the picture from memory.
The longer you wait between the fixing of the picture and the stroke, the less
vivid the former will be, and if you start thinking of your hands, feet, elbows,
head, and all the rest of it in the interval, the picture will be quite blurred,
and you will have lost all sense of distance and direction. Take one good look,
fix the picture in your mind's eye, and play at once into the picture.
